Super Runners Among Us: Phil Martin and Marge Prather

Posted on April 25, 2016

If you know members Phil Martin and Marge Prather, then you know they are one dynamic duo with a long history at our Y. Phil started teaching our older adult group exercise classes in the early 1970s, and continued for the next three decades until he “retired” in 2003—leaving Marge in command of the classes. It was also during this time the pair made a long-term commitment to running.

Phil ran his first Chicago Marathon in 1977 at the age of 52—and then proceeded to run it every year after that for a total of 26. By his second year he convinced Marge to join him, which she claims was no easy feat. But with each smaller race, Phil persuaded Marge that she could accomplish more and run farther, and he was right. She completed seven Chicago Marathons.

For Phil and Marge, running became a way of life. They found themselves traveling to run 5Ks and 10Ks every weekend. There are many memories, races and stories that hold special significance. One they both share, separately, was the honor of carrying the Olympic torch. Marge ran it in 1984 through Schererville, Indiana, and Phil carried it through Merrillville, Indiana, in 1996.

At 90 and 81 years old respectively, Phil and Marge hung up their running shoes a little over 10 years ago. Though both accomplished more in their adult running career than many do in a lifetime.
