Super Runners Among Us: Thom Martin
Running has always been easy for Thom Martin; he unequivocally loves it. A fit, focused and accomplished runner, he didn’t start in the sport until he was 28 years old. Thom wanted to quit smoking—and he figured the best way to accomplish that was to start running. Less than one year later, he achieved his goal and dropped not only an unhealthy habit, but also 50 pounds. He completed his first 10K race during that time as well, placing fourth.
For the next two decades, he continued to run short races, 5Ks and 10Ks. It wasn’t until two years ago at the age of 56 that Thom decided to run his first long distance race, the Chicago Marathon. He didn’t have an end goal, but learned upon finishing he was just one minute over the qualifying time for the Boston Marathon. So when he ran the Fox Valley Marathon last year, he decided he would try to qualify—and succeeded with a third place age group finish in 3 hours and 13 minutes. So off to Boston Thom went, where he finished the 2016 Boston Marathon in an impressive 3:33!
Next up on his calendar will be The Y Run 5K and Super Kids Fun Run, which has special significance. A loyal supporter of the Y, Thom is a volunteer on the race committee and his company TMC2 is a generous sponsor of the event. In fact, you’ll find many members of his family and his employees joining him to lace up on May 21.
