Policies and Rules

We are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels respected, safe, and comfortable and is part of this amazing YMCA community we share. When in our facility or participating in our programs, all individuals are required to adhere to our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. In that spirit, we expect members and guests to be kind and considerate to each other and to the staff in our Ys and online while respecting the rights and personal space of others at all times.

The B.R. Ryall YMCA of Northwestern DuPage County is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all members and guests. To promote safety and comfort for everyone, all individuals are asked to act appropriately at all times when in our facility or participating in our programs.

We expect persons using the YMCA to act maturely, to behave responsibly, and to respect the rights and dignity of others. Our Member & Participant Code of Conduct outlines prohibited actions, but the actions listed below are not an all-inclusive list of behaviors considered inappropriate in our facilities or programs.

The following are strictly prohibited:

  • Using or possessing alcohol or illegal chemicals on YMCA property, in YMCA vehicles or at YMCA sponsored programs.
  • No smoking on YMCA property. The Y is a smoke-free environment.
  • No pets are allowed on YMCA property unless they are “working dogs” to assist members while accessing the facilities.
  • Carrying or concealing a weapon or any device or object that may be used as a weapon.
  • Harassment or intimidation using words, gestures, body language or any menacing type of behavior.
  • Physical contact with another person in an angry, aggressive or threatening way.
  • Verbally abusive or offensive behavior, including angry or vulgar language, swearing, name-calling or shouting.
  • Sexually explicit conversation or behavior; any sexual contact with another person.
  • Inappropriate, immodest or sexually revealing attire.
  • Theft or behavior that results in the destruction or loss of property.
  • Loitering within or on the grounds of the YMCA.
  • Use of social networking websites in a manner that is contrary to the YMCA’s mission, is detrimental to the community or is in violation of the law.
  • Cell phone photography or unauthorized photography of members or participants.

In addition the YMCA reserves the right to deny access or membership to any person who has been convicted of any crime involving sexual abuse, is or has been a registered sex offender, has ever been convicted of any offense relating to the use, sale, possession or transportation of narcotics or habit forming and/or dangerous drugs, chemicals, narcotics or intoxicating beverages.

Members and guests are encouraged to take responsibility for their personal comfort and safety. Anyone who feels uncomfortable in confronting a person directly should report the behavior to a staff person. Suspension or termination of YMCA membership privileges may result if the CEO determines that a violation of the Member and Participant Code of Conduct has occurred.

  • Modesty is encouraged.
  • Children age 7 and younger may enter any locker room with a parent/guardian. Children age 8 and older should use the appropriate locker room for their gender.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to use the sauna or steam room.
  • A swimsuit or shorts must be worn.
  • Cell phone use is not permitted.
  • Lockers are for day-use only. Items may not be left in lockers overnight.
  • Help maintain a clean facility by practicing hygienic habits in the shower and removing hair from drain after use.
  • Pick-up area after use and dispose of debris in recycling and garbage bins.
  • The Y is not responsible for lost or stolen property. Please leave your valuables at home.
  • Anyone who defaces or damages the locker room is subject to disciplinary action and will be held financially responsible.
  • Please report any inappropriate behavior to a YMCA staff member.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to enter.
  • A swimsuit or shorts must be worn. Shoes and socks are not permitted.
  • Do not wear jewelry, as the metal and stones may heat up and burn exposed skin.
  • Exit immediately if uncomfortable, dizzy or sleepy.
  • Do not enter if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease or while under the use of antibiotics, alcohol or other drugs. If you have a known medical condition, please consult with your physician
    prior to use.
  • Cool down for at least 5 minutes after exercising prior to entering.
  • For safety reasons and to prevent overheating, limit your time to no more than 15 minutes.
  • Please shower with soap before entering.
  • Do not touch or cover the heat/steam source.
  • Do not pour water on sauna rocks.
  • Shaving is not permitted.
  • Drink plenty of water before and after use. Food, gum and beverages (other than water in a sealed non-glass container) are not permitted.
  • Newspapers, magazines and reading material are not permitted.
  • Cell phone use is not permitted.
  • Food and drinks (except water in sealed, unbreakable containers) are not permitted.
  • Hanging or dunking on rims or nets is not permitted.
  • Full- or cross-court games are not permitted if others are waiting to play.
  • Please return balls to storage after use.
  • Leaning, pulling or sitting on the curtain is not permitted.
  • Non-marking, closed-toe athletic shoes are required.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct, profanity and equipment misuse are not permitted.
  • Please check with gym schedule for court availability.
  • The Y is not responsible for personal injury, or for lost or damaged items.
